Materials and the Environment

The Wood

Picture
Our intent was to  make the most beautiful performance Hand Planes anywhere in
the world and we  have tested every marine  wood imaginable within our  specific
gravity criteria to  achieve this. We have narrowed down the field to  three wood
varieties all grown in the US. These are Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Poplar and  Paulownia.
Paulownia is fast making  its way to the US.  Indigenous to Australia  this is the
greenest of all lumber  and is now grown in the South Eastern United  States.
Paulownia trees can be  harvested and renewed after only ten years and
require very little resource to  grow. This beautifully  grained wood is about
the same weight as Balsa, but is  twice as strong.

The Environment

All our Paulownia Hand Planes are made from the  remnants of  Alia surfboards. This saves waste as these pieces are normally
burned and since  the glue ups are different it makes each one of our planes  unique. We love doing  our part to protect the environment and at the same time  making an original  piece of art.  We buy end pieces for our OG Planes, use  recycled
materials  whenever possible and recycle all our remnants. Protecting the  enviroment is in our DNA.

The Finish

We use multiple coats of premium blue polyester surfboard  resin to seal and protect the wood. It would be much easier to spray
the finish  like the others, but it just isn't the same. Our goal is that your WaveRay Hand  Plane lasts for life.

Repair

Picture
Although we use non-porous woods, should you chip one of our  Hand Planes and want
to repair, it is easily repaired the same way  you would  repair a small surfboard ding.
