Wave Ray Surf Company

Wave Ray Surf Company is a group of people who love what we do  and  never take ourselves too seriously. Our goal is to revive
vintage  1950’s - 1970’s surf products with new features made possible by using modern  techniques as well as hopefully develop new future classics. All of our products are produced in California, USA. 

The Story

In 2007 my good friend Jon was traveling to Hawaii and took back his 70’s vintage hand plane after loaning it to me for over a year.
I loved the thing. Super easy to throw into a suitcase when traveling or to use in the summer months when the swells in California are small. For months I looked for a hand plane at every surf shop I could find. They didn't carry them anymore and no one knew exactly why.  I learned a couple of things in the process   1. I would have to make my own hand plane if  I wanted anything more
than a flat piece of wood and 2. Many shops would carry  hand planes if there was a quality source for them. 

I worked on various designs over the next two years, but when I met  my business partner Gary and Southern California local legend shaper, Jeff Grygera in early 2009 everything came together. We have developed what we and our riders believe are the two best models available anywhere in the world.  The WaveRay OG and the WaveRay Palmer Pro. Along with some amazingly talented
partners  Wave Ray Surf Company has developed a manufacturing process around the ideal  board, not the board around a limited shaping process. What we do is harder and  much more costly than the others, but once you ride one of our  planes you’ll  understand the difference.

The Hand Planes


WaveRay OG Hand Plane

The OG model gives homage to the old school hand boards of the 50’s-70’s, but incorporates some modern design features including the unique WaveRay Tail and the Concave Palm 
Handle. The hole through grip took many months of trial and error to get right and feels amazing. Many companies that make  hand planes either do not use this feature or have a flat surface to grip.  Contrary to some claims, you can easily swim stroke with this style plane and  we  have all but eliminated resistance by adding a finger well in the bottom of  the  plane.The truth is, it is very difficult to make this hole  through feature the way we do, but the result is definitely worth the work.

 The WaveRay OG Hand Plane is simple to use, and 
performs well in all surf conditions. We use heavier woods for  this  model. The added weight pulls you into the wave, so it works well even in  small  surf.

WaveRay Palmer Pro

Although this plane works well in all surf  conditions it was  designed by request for some big wave riders. The bottom
WaveRay Spine Fin  combined with the Concaved Palm Handle gives the rider  maximum leverage and  control. The Concaved Palm Handle also allows the plane to  be used as an  effective swim paddle to quickly get in or out of the action. This Plane literally becomes part of your hand. It just doesn't move or slip around. Made from light  weight Paulownia wood, the WaveRay Palmer Pro loaded with resin, strap  and a leash  weights only 12.5 ounces. This weight is ideal for bigger surf. There have been many copiers of this design using glueups, etc., but this is the original and the best in class.
